Established in 1969, the Huntsman Marine Science Centre is a not-for-profit marine biology research and education centre located in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. Its mission is to inspire stewardship by engaging the community in ocean exploration. Prior to 2005 Huntsman’s financial model relied on federal government grants and university membership programs. The model became unsustainable due to changes in grant eligibility criteria. This, combined with aging infrastructure meant Huntsman began looking for a new model to attract new research projects and deliver a number of education programs. To adopt a new approach and focus on long-term economic viability Huntsman’s Board of Directors engaged the services of ReThink Inc.
ReThink Inc.’s engagement with Huntsman began in 2006. We refreshed the strategic vision and mission, and prepared a Change Management strategy. We helped them implement changes to the organizational and operating business structures. ReThink Inc. assisted Huntsman to raise $20 million in new infrastructure investments. These monies were invested in onsite accommodations, research labs, research vessels, the Fundy Discovery Aquarium, and new lecture theatres. We also worked with staff to refresh Huntsman’s programs and partnerships. The Huntsman Marine Science Centre remains an iconic marine research and educational resource for discovering the Bay of Fundy. It has influenced over 40,000 students from across North America since its inception.
